Writer Greg Lewis went to Chile to search for an insight into the life and work of this somewhat enigmatic figure in South American literature. As well as being a poet, Mistral was a teacher, a traveller and a diplomat, dedicating her life to the education of the young, especially young women, believing they could be liberated from poverty through learning. She grew up in a humble home in Montegrande, in Chile's Elqui Valley, an agricultural area surrounded by harsh desert. Gabriela Mistral was the first South American to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.
